Minetta Tavern

Although until 1929 the building housed The Black Rabbit, a speakeasy, the Minetta Tavern, an Italian restaurant, opened its doors in 1937. Reportedly Hemingway enjoyed dining here whenever he was in the city and Readers Digest was founded in the building's basement.

  In the film, the restaurant was known confusingly as The La Trattoria and it was owned by mobster Frank Vitale. Unfortunately for Michael Felgate, that just happened to be the father of the woman he was in love with and had just proposed to. Her father's mob connections came as something of a shock to Michael when he visited Frank here for the first time.
