The Dakota

The Dakota apartment building, built in the 1880s, was named because at the time of its construction West 72nd street was so far removed from the fashionable areas of the city that it might as well have been in North or South Dakota. Its tragic claim to fame however will always be as the location where, on December 8th, 1980, John Lennon's life was tragically cut short by a crazed fan.
