The Ansonia
Perhaps second only to the Dakota in fame on the Upper West Side, the Ansonia is a luxury apartment building of the highest order. Each apartment is sound proofed to the extent that according to building legend, when one tenant shot himself in 1910, his wife didn't hear the shot in the next room. In the 1970's, the Continental Baths, where Bette Midler entertained before making it big, opened in the building's basement and before long the baths became Plato's Retreat, the city's most famous sex club, now long since closed.
