Washington Square Arch

In 1889 a wooden arch was constructed near the site of the current marble arch in Washington Square Park, to commemorate the centennial of George Washington's inaugural. The arch proved so popular that the permanent structure was commissioned and completed in 1895. Cars were allowed to drive through the arch until 1971, when the park was redesigned.
