New York Public Library

One of the most famous libraries in the world, the New York Public Library, with its celebrated stone lions out front (which urban legend tells us, will only roar when a virgin walks by), opened its doors to the public on May 24th, 1911. The New York Public Library system houses over 14 million books and boasts nearly 2 million cardholders. Nearly 15 million people visit the library per year.
